5th Owner Builder story up
Posted on Thursday, March 29 2007 @ 02:51:32 EDT
Topic: News and Updates
News and UpdatesIts been awhile, but I finally got around to getting another OB story up. MB is also from Chandler, AZ so we are neighbors of sorts. A lot of you will really be interested in MB's story because many of you have written to me asking, "Ben, prices have gone up since you built your pool - what is the current cost TODAY for building a pool as an owner/builder?"

You will be glad to hear that MB built his pool in 2006 (wrapped up around Sept/Oct), so if you are wanting to see current costs, this is as good as it gets (for now!).

In the detailed story (that you can find here), I have as usual, the total cost of his pool along with an estimate of what he saved by going the OB route. With these overall figures, you'll see how much the costs have gone up for doing a pool OB style here in AZ.

MB's pool is a large 26,000 gallon/41x14/600SA/108ft perimeter lagoon-style pebble-sheen pool with a spa, large waterfall, and a 400K BTU heater. Its a 2-pump system (2hp filtration/spa, 2hp WF, 2hp blower) with textured cement coping around the pool.

MB added some nice features that I did not add to my pool: a diving pool, Fiber-optic lighting, a gazebo, and a fogger. With the exception of the diving feature, he breaks out these features separately so that you can subtract them out as additional options and be able to compare apples-to-apples and see how the costs have risen.

I also have an enlarged image of his pool plan so you'll be able to see the nitty gritty details of his design. I also do something that I haven't done in the other OB stories: I will include a detailed break-down of his costs, sub-by-sub, so that you can see the relative cost of each stage of his pool. I think you will find that very helpful in seeing what the current cost of building an OB pool is.

This story also is different in another regard: MB wrote his own story - he was so excited about what he did and how it turned out that he insisted on writing up his own story and laying it out the way that he wanted. You'll notice the difference right away as he writes in the first person. This is just a heads up in case you get caught off guard by the writing style.

Anyways, this really got me thinking about the website and how it can be improved. There are so many pool stories that you all have written to me about, and I feel bad that they are all still there, sitting in my inbox, waiting to be processed. I'm currently working on a blogging feature that will allow you to write your own stories on the site and be able to post your own details how you want. Its still work in progress, so be patient.

You can find the details of MB's story here.

Until then, continue to pool on ...
